Les Paul, requested the tail be top wrapped to allow him to easily

palm mute the strings. In 1952, Gibson got it wrong, and under

wrapped the strings. Gibson corrected it the next year. The wrap tail

acted as the bridge at that time so it was positioned at scale length,

24-? inches from the nut. When the Tune-o-matic bridge was

invented, the tail was moved back and the bridge was installed

at scale length. With the strings now going over the bridge, it was

no longer necessary to top wrap the stop tail. For Gibson models

without a bridge today, it is still necessary to top wrap the stop

tail. For Gibson models with a bridge, it is an option.
