Acesta a folosit o mulțime de materiale video ale grupului The Doors care nu au mai fost pânã acum arãtate publicului larg. Înregistrãrile includ momente inedite de la începutul carierei artistice a lui Jim Morrison din timpul orelor ºcolii de film din cadrul UCLA ºi continuã pânã la moartea suspectã a acestuia în 1971. Ray Manzarek, clãparul trupei The Doors, a declarat pentru Billboard cã documentarul "When You're Strange" este "adevãrata poveste a grupului The Doors", fiind caracterizat drept "opusul lui Oliver Stone".
