Phil Rudd REALLY Wants to be Back with AC/DC

 

 

 

 

   "Drummer Phil Rudd is currently under house arrest after pleading guilty to threatening to kill a former associate, as well as  drug possession. Meanwhile, his kind of, sort of, band AC/DC is out on the road touring Rock or Bust.

 

  Throughout Rudd’s lengthy, current legal battle that began in 2014, one question has constantly been raised: Is Phil Rudd still considered AC/DC’s drummer? It’s a fair one to ask, considering that the band has been more than okay continuing on with Chris Slade, without declaring one way or the other if Rudd is on the outs.

 

   In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Rudd was asked if he was still a member of AC/DC. He responded: “Me and everyone else says that, But that’s not what Angus says. I don’t want to upset Angus by saying the wrong thing. Me and Angus kicked serious ass and he knows if I was there, it would be better. I know he knows that, because I’ve proven it before. Just give me five minutes in a room with him and I’ll get my job back. I promise ya. I was doing hard personally and did some things I probably shouldn’t have done. We’ve all got our cross to bear.”

 

   Rudd, whose lawyer is appealing the eight-month house arrest sentence, also noted: “All I’m looking for is an opportunity to step back up. Once I get back my freedom to travel, I’ll hopefully be heading straight back to whatever they’re doing. I feel great. Better than I’ve ever felt before. I’m very keen to get back in the saddle.

 

  “I’m ready to go,” he continued. “Never been fitter. Never been more passionate. I’m more dangerous than I’ve ever been. They should get me back there, even if it’s just for a weekend to have some jam in some fuckin’ small room somewhere in a basement.”

What's In A Roar? Crafting Godzilla's Iconic Sound
 

In the 1954 original, the sound effects team tried, unsuccessfully, to use animal sounds to create the roar. It was Japanese composer Akira Ifukube who had the idea to use a musical instrument to create the shriek we all know.

"It was actually a double bass, using a leather glove coated in pine-tar resin to create friction," Aadahl says. "They'd rub it against the string of the double bass to create that sound."

 

They did share some of the details of the process. They played a lot with anything that created friction — experimenting with the sounds of rusty car doors and rubbing the surface of a tom drum.

Using a scientific microphone, they captured sounds at frequencies outside the realm of human hearing, and then pitched them down in the studio.

What "that allowed us to do was exploit this vast universe of sounds that really people have never heard before," Van der Ryn says.

They also recorded the shriek blaring from the Rolling Stones tour speakers on the back lot of Warner Brothers studios. This allowed them to capture the echoes and reflections of the roar off the cityscape. It also caused some commotion.

Doudou N’diaye Rose, 85, Senegalese Drummer and ‘Human Treasure,’ Dies
 

Doudou N’diaye Rose, a master drummer and bandleader from Senegal who became an emissary of his native culture’s joyous and complex rhythms to the rest of the world, touring with percussion orchestras in Europe, Asia and the United States, died on Wednesday in Dakar, Senegal. He was 85.

Over the years Mr. Rose appeared onstage or on the bill with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, the Rolling Stones and Peter Gabriel, and he was among those named as “living human treasures” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. He made his American debut in 1988 with a 30-member version of his orchestra at the Beacon Theater in New York, a performance featuring exuberant dancers and vivid costuming as a complement to the orchestra’s pulsing rhythms.

Finnish Funeral Doom Icons Skepticism's New Album, 'Ordeal,' Is a Triumph of Gloom
 

Unlike their one-then-done genre co-developers in Thergothon, Finnish funeral doom pioneers Skepticism have slowly and steadily been releasing music for nearly 25 years. Seven years have passed since their previous release, though the act’s notoriety is again rising in North American following a domineering Maryland Death Festival set back in May. Clad in distinguished black suits with starched black or white button downs beneath, the band played as the sun dropped in the humid sky—a fittingly oppressive setting for the band’s equally oppressive sound.

According to keyboardist and lyricist Eero Pöyry, the show marked a first for the band: it was the first time they’ve performed in view of the sun. The upcoming September 18th release Ordeal marks many more firsts: it’s Skepticism’s first record for Svart Records, is their first live recording, and features the first instance that vocalist Matti helped out on keyboards (it’s on opening track “You” and they did it because to play the note, Eero would have needed “a third arm”).

Captured in one take at the intimate Klubi in Turku, Finland on Saturday, January 24, 2015, the long-anticipated fifth full length is monolithic, glacially paced, and dismal; growling howls are woven throughout. While Skepticism’s previous album, 2008's Alloy, was more guitar-based, this album sees the band embrace a live sound that merges instrumentation, which results in atmospheric leaps: it’s often hard to tell where the keyboards end and guitars begin, meaning stunning cinematic swells are the norm.

We talked about that and much more on a cold September afternoon, over a crackly line that connected Riihimäki, Finland to Calgary, Canada.

When Clash calls Lou Barlow, lo-fi legend of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh, sound-tracker to perhaps the most gritty film ever, Kids, he’s in the middle of something refreshingly un-rock n’ roll: a family reunion. It’s an annual affair for the Barlows apparently, the last Sunday of every August.

Hanging out in the sunshine with his kids, back in his hometown of Dayton Ohio, seems a pretty apt setting to catch him, given how he describes his peeled-down, drum-less, acoustic solo record: “back to basics and personal.”

Dylan Carlson on the wondrous second life of Earth
 

The music that guitarist Dylan Carlson has been making with his project Earth in the past 10 years would stand up formidably by itself, even without Earth’s early-1990s forays into furious, abstracted sludge. Carlson’s more recent work keeps some of the droning deliberation of Earth’s beginnings, but re-focuses it through ringing melodies and harmonically complex but clean-toned chords. In fact, it’s surprising that last year’s album Primitive And Deadly incorporates as much distorted bite as it does, considering Earth’s other recent albums. On 2007’s The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull, Carlson and drummer Adrienne Davies (the only other constant member of Earth’s current incarnation) use their command of slow tempos to create not languor but suspense, as the songs build up in shimmering layers of organ, piano and surreally twangy guitar. The companion albums Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light I and Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light II, released in 2011 and 2012, and recorded while Carlson battled a near-fatal strain of hepatitis, showcase a more loose and improvisational approach to Carlson’s instrumental compositions, with help from bassist Karl Blau and cellist Lori Goldston. Primitive And Deadly switches things up still further with three tracks featuring vocals, two from Mark Lanegan and one from Rabia Shaheen Qazi of Rose Windows. Recently Carlson also has been exploring his interest in British folklore, and further dimensions of tuneful but challenging guitar explorations, in a solo project called Drcarlsonalbion. Ahead of Earth’s show on Tuesday, September 8 at The Frequency, Carlson spoke with me about Earth’s frequently shifting lineup and execution.

Noise legend Keiji Haino to unveil “the final response” to John Cage’s 4′33″
 

Japanese noise royalty Keiji Haino will debut Miracle, his first proper composition, at the Sound Live Tokyo festival in October. The piece has been planned by Haino for 40 years and is described as “the final response” to John Cage’s epochal 4′33″.

Composed and conducted by Haino and directed by Noriyuki Kiguchi, Miracle will see 88 performers each play one note out of the 88 keys on a single piano, at the same time – an action predicted to have a 50% success rate.

Boris and Merzbow collaborate on new full-length for Relapse
 

In celebration of delicious partnerships, the two entities have gotten together for a new album called Gensho (Japanese for “phenomenon”) out February through Relapse. The album is a 150-minute double-disc affair with separate CDs for Boris and Merzbow, the former featuring reinventions of the band’s earlier material and the latter featuring entirely new compositions. Though the two records may be listened to individually, they are intended to be played simultaneously on multiple speakers at varying volumes, so that the listener may experience their own phenomenon, or “Gensho.” Hey, Gensho! That’s the album’s title!

Rodion Roșca este membrul fondator al trupei românești de new wave/rock Rodion G.A., formată în 1977, împreună cu Gicu Fărcaș și Adrian Căprar. Absolvent al Liceului de Muzică din Cluj, instrumentul clarinet, Rodion este mai degrabă atras de compoziție și experiment, astfel că, între anii 1970 – 1977, înregistrează prin metodele proprii, în apartamentul său, peste 70 de cântece.

A Conversation With Rick Rubin, Music's Greatest Vibes Manager
 

Before he settled in Malibu, Rubin had produced music for acts including Slayer, Johnny Cash, Jay Z, Tom Petty, the Dixie Chicks, and Justin Timberlake. More recently, under Rubin’s stewardship, Shangri-La has hosted sessions for superstars like Eminem and Black Sabbath. His work as the executive producer of Kanye West’s Yeezus, where he helped reduce several sprawling hours of material into a minimalist 10-track album under severe time constraints, has brought him a new wave of notoriety. He’s continued to work with developing artists along with legends—recently, he hosted James Blake for the first album the singer will record largely outside of his home studio.

Rubin is a nontraditional producer. He doesn’t play any instruments, and he can’t operate a mixing board or a Pro Tools setup. In fact, he seems to be actively uninterested in spending much time in a recording studio. Instead, Rubin is best known for his talents as a listener, with his ability to offer insightful notes on how artists can improve their songs. He’s a kind of psychological problem-solver, skilled at getting artists to a creative place where they can record and finish the best album they can deliver. Here, Rubin discusses his uncommon approach to his uncommon job.
