Stian Westerhus: Pitch Black & Star Spangled

How do you decide which guitar to use on your solo gigs?

My main guitar is the 335. The wood was made in the late ’60s. It was hanging in the factory because of a bad paint job. In the ’70s, Gibson put some electronics into guitars like that one and stamped a “2” on the back of the neck. It is not collectible— otherwise I couldn’t have afforded it. After I had it for about four years, it started getting much louder acoustically. Guitars really need to be played.

When you want low notes and are playing the 335, what do you do?

I have a Boss OC-3 Super Octave and the Eventide PitchFactor. Or, if I feel like I should have some baritone notes, I will just tune the low-E string down to a low A during the performance. I just make it work. My music has dirt under the fingernails—it is not clean in any way.

A Rookie's Guide to Nick Cave, Our True Prince of Darkness

The legendary Nick Cave, as a caricature, is easy to paint; all black linearity and angular shadows like some Goya grotesque. A sinister lord of malevolent melancholy, the Darth Vader of rock who crushes the souls of inane journalists the world over with a caustic grunt and the stylish stamp of a glistening Cuban heel. But the truth is eminently more subtle, rewarding and humorous. Emanating as much dark matter as he does spiritual enlightenment, Cave and his coterie are an all round class act.

Rock star, novelist, screenwriter, preacher, forged from some elemental antipodean spring of provocation, vitriol and vulgarity, Nick Cave is dazzlingly prolific and unnervingly erudite. He and his band of merry men will lead you through Dionysian debauchery all the way to Bible belt America, on their journey down the River Styx. You want violence, chaos, and the gut-wrenching beauty of the sublime? You got it. You want libidinous lounge ballads, strutting histrionics and porn star moustaches? Well, you got that too.

Exclusive: Listen to a Brand New Jimi Hendrix Tune, ‘Station Break,’ Unearthed After 50 Years

Everyone is aware of the guitar wizardry of Jimi Hendrix, just as everyone knows that his brilliance was cut horribly short when he died in 1970 at just 27 years old. Since that time, his limited catalog has been issued and reissued, remastered, remixed, and demos and live performances packaged in an attempt to feed a public hunger for more of his music.

It was, unfortunately, a well that has long been dry. Until now.

10 Things We Learned from Paul Reed Smith

Paul Reed Smith is no stranger to Premier Guitar: He has joined us for NAMM demos, opened up his factory for private tours, and even performed for the PG cameras during Experience PRS. Just in time for his company’s 30th anniversary, Smith gave fans and PRS owners an opportunity to ask him questions when he took over our Facebook account for about 90 minutes. Thanks to all of your inquiries, we uncovered a few nuggets of the luthier’s personal and professional life that were previously kept under wraps. Here are the highlights:

11 Things You Never Thought to Do with Your Effects Chain

In today’s world most people are mixing and tracking in the box. With this comes a lot more flexibility than in the past, but I find the understanding of signal flow isn’t as strong. (Youngsters these days!!)

I suppose I’m at an advantage as a guitarist. I have pedals to tinker with. Over the years I’ve moved pedals around and tried many different chains. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident.

This idea goes far beyond guitar. These principles apply to plugins as well. Not only for guitar based plugins like Logic’s “Pedalboard,” but individual plugins for all instruments.

In this article I’m going to give you 11 variations on signal flow that you can use to create interesting sounds on any instrument.

Scientists Are Making Music with Slime Mold and Whale Songs

This year's theme is biomusic, a niche field of centered around biological processes that inform and create musical compositions, be they artificially intelligent virtual whales jamming with a saxophonist, a biocomputer run on slime mold doing a duet on the piano, or data collated from British woodland ecosystems turning into music.

Listen to a Mozart lullaby from the world's tiniest nanopiano

Nanoart can welcome a new fellow into the world -- a microscopic "piano" no bigger than the width of a human hair. The tiny piano is capable of playing tunes and may also have some pretty interesting implications in the field of data storage.

What Ancient Greek Music Sounded Like: Hear a Reconstruction That is ‘100% Accurate’

Between 750 BC and 400 BC, the Ancient Greeks composed songs meant to be accompanied by the lyre, reed-pipes, and various percussion instruments. More than 2,000 years later, modern scholars have finally figured out how to reconstruct and perform these songs with (it’s claimed) 100% accuracy.
